Sanford Health is expanding its medical team in western South Dakota with the addition of 16 physicians from Rapid City Medical Center.
The incoming providers represent multiple disciplines, and are scheduled to officially join Sanford Health on May 1. Patients will receive formal notifications, and those choosing to continue with their transitioning physicians will be contacted to arrange future appointments.
This development follows a series of major moves by Sanford Health in the region, including Denny Sanford’s $300 million gift announced in November to establish the new Sanford Black Hills Medical Center campus, along with the recent additions of Black Hills Plastic Surgery and Creekside Medical Clinic. The organization says these steps reaffirm its mission to expand world‑class health care for Rapid City and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, Rapid City Medical Center and Monument Health have entered into a Letter of Intent that could bring the two major Black Hills health systems together later this spring. The nonbinding agreement begins a formal due‑diligence period before a final transaction is negotiated.
If the deal moves forward, Rapid City Medical Center would become part of Monument Health, though leaders from both organizations emphasized that patient services, providers, clinic locations, and insurance participation will remain unchanged during the transition.
Should the transaction be finalized, many Rapid City Medical Center physicians are expected to join Monument Health, while others may choose to remain independent or affiliate with different practices. Until then, both organizations will continue operating separately. More information is expected later this spring.
